Ancient Jetta, kind of like one a girlfriend I had in college had. The car didn’t have a reverse gear, so she would have to park in areas she didn’t have to back out from.

Nice Mk1,
Are you sure your friend understood 1 and down?

My dad had an 82 Rabbit and my first car was an 88 Fox. Lots of people were flummoxed when it came to getting it in reverse.

That’s because lots of people are dumb. VWs are for smart people.

Haha! My first car was an 85 Jetta GLI - mine didn’t have a functioning reverse either! Funny how good you get at parking only on slightly sloped streets/driveways and let gravity do the work. That one really was a
5
speed!

Had an ‘84 Jetta turbodiesel. Clutch went early, they did it out-of-warranty. Essentially a Rabbit with a trunk. Fun car.

That’s fair. I actually thinks it’s super weird that my car doesn’t have any sort of reverse lock out thing although It also has a left, and up reverse gear. I really liked the cooler under the shifter my Mom’s old Focus had. The VW push down thing is a bit old though, I don’t like the idea of the shifter moving,

Ttyymmnn and I go back about 50 years. A bit of an inside joke that was.

I have owned numerous VWs, and that reverse gear flummoxed many a repair man.
